PRP is mainstream now. Every dermatology clinic offers it for Rs.3000–Rs.8000 a session. GFC came along 3 years ago, positioned as "PRP 2.0" at Rs.8000–Rs.18000 a session. So is GFC actually 3x better? Short answer: it's modestly better in early-stage hair loss, but most patients see the same outcome from a properly done PRP at a third of the cost. Here's the long answer.
What is PRP exactly?
Platelet-Rich Plasma. Your own blood (15–20 ml) is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to separate platelets from RBCs/WBCs, and the concentrated platelet plasma is injected back into the scalp. Platelets release growth factors (PDGF, VEGF, TGF, IGF, EGF) which stimulate dormant hair follicles and slow miniaturization.
Typical platelet concentration in PRP: 3–6 times your baseline blood concentration. Standard preparation: single-spin centrifuge, takes 8–10 minutes. No additives.
What is GFC exactly?
Growth Factor Concentrate. Same blood draw, but processed with a proprietary GFC kit (Indian brands like Regenica, Hair-X, Apollo HairFusion are common). The kit lyses (breaks open) the platelets to release the growth factors directly, then concentrates the supernatant. Result: a higher-potency growth-factor solution without the cellular debris of PRP.
Typical growth factor concentration: 3–5 times higher than standard PRP. Preparation takes 25–35 minutes due to the additional processing steps.
The real difference in growth factor concentration
| Growth Factor | Baseline blood | PRP | GFC |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDGF (cell growth) | 1x | 4–6x | 15–20x |
| VEGF (vascular) | 1x | 3–5x | 12–18x |
| IGF (insulin-like) | 1x | 3–4x | 10–15x |
| EGF (epidermal) | 1x | 2–4x | 8–12x |
On paper this looks like GFC is dramatically superior. In real clinical outcomes the gap is much smaller — published trials show GFC delivers about 15–25% better hair count improvement than PRP at 6 months. That's a meaningful but not transformative difference.
Who benefits, who doesn't
PRP/GFC works well for:
- Early-stage androgenetic alopecia (NW1–NW3)
- Patients with active miniaturization (thinning hair, not bald)
- Women with diffuse hair thinning
- Telogen effluvium (stress-related shedding)
- Post-transplant boosting (months 3–6)
PRP/GFC does NOT work for:
- Fully bald scalp (NW6, NW7) — no follicles left to stimulate
- Scarring alopecia
- Alopecia areata (autoimmune)
- Patients not also using minoxidil/finasteride — effect fades fast
Cost in India 2026
| City | PRP per session | GFC per session |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Rs.4000 – Rs.8000 | Rs.10,000 – Rs.18,000 |
| Mumbai | Rs.4500 – Rs.9000 | Rs.11,000 – Rs.20,000 |
| Bangalore | Rs.4000 – Rs.7500 | Rs.10,000 – Rs.17,000 |
| Hyderabad | Rs.3500 – Rs.7000 | Rs.9000 – Rs.15,000 |
| Jaipur | Rs.3000 – Rs.6000 | Rs.8000 – Rs.14,000 |
| Tier-2 cities | Rs.2500 – Rs.5000 | Rs.7000 – Rs.12,000 |
A complete PRP package (6 sessions) costs Rs.18,000–Rs.45,000. A complete GFC package costs Rs.50,000–Rs.1,00,000. For most patients, that 2.5–3x cost premium delivers a 15–25% better outcome — not a great deal mathematically.
Session protocol and what to expect
- Session schedule: 4–6 sessions, one month apart (loading phase)
- Maintenance: 1 session every 3–4 months thereafter
- Per-session time: 60–75 minutes total (blood draw, processing, injection)
- Pain level: Topical anaesthetic cream applied 30 min before. Mild scalp pinching during injection.
- Downtime: Zero. Resume normal activity same day. Avoid hair wash for 24 hours.
- Results visible: Session 3–4 onwards. Full effect by session 6.
PRP/GFC alongside a hair transplant
This is where the value math improves significantly. When done as an adjunct to transplant:
- Improves graft survival by 5–10%
- Accelerates the shedding-to-regrowth phase by 4–6 weeks
- Strengthens native (non-transplanted) hair around the transplant zone
Most reputable clinics include 2–3 free PRP sessions in their transplant package. If your package doesn't, ask for them to be added — they should cost no more than Rs.6000–8000 each in the same clinic. Don't skip them.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | PRP | GFC |
|---|---|---|
| Growth factor concentration | 3–5x baseline | 10–20x baseline |
| Real-world outcome | Good | 15–25% better than PRP |
| Cost per session | Rs.3000–9000 | Rs.8000–20,000 |
| Full package cost | Rs.18K–45K | Rs.50K–1L |
| Sessions needed | 6 + maintenance | 4–5 + maintenance |
| Processing time per session | 8–10 min | 25–35 min |
| Side effects | Minimal (your own blood) | Minimal |
| Best for | Most patients | Aggressive early-stage AGA, budget no concern |
Marketing myths to ignore
- "GFC regrows fully bald scalp." No. Bald scalp has dead follicles. Neither PRP nor GFC can resurrect them.
- "One GFC session = 6 PRP sessions." No. The protocol is still 4–6 sessions for GFC; just slightly fewer than PRP.
- "GFC has no side effects unlike chemicals." Both are derived from your own blood. Side effect profile is identical.
- "GFC replaces minoxidil and finasteride." No. Without medication holding the hair loss, PRP/GFC effects fade within 9 months.
- "Stem cell GFC." No stem cells are involved. Pure marketing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GFC better than PRP for hair?
GFC has roughly 3 to 5 times higher growth factor concentration than standard PRP, which translates to slightly better results. But it costs 2x to 3x more per session, and the real-world difference is often only marginal. PRP is sufficient for most patients.
How many PRP sessions are needed for hair?
A standard PRP protocol is 4 to 6 sessions, one month apart, followed by maintenance every 3 to 4 months. Results visible from session 3 onwards.
Is PRP painful?
PRP injections are uncomfortable but not painful. Topical anaesthetic cream is applied 30 minutes before.
Can PRP or GFC replace a hair transplant?
No. PRP and GFC stimulate existing follicles and slow miniaturization, but cannot regrow hair from fully dead follicles.
Does PRP after transplant improve results?
Yes. PRP sessions starting 3 to 4 months after transplant can improve graft survival and accelerate early growth.
